Filters and policy - Presentation

Principle

Watchdoc allows you to set up a printing policy based on events that apply to print queues.

The policy performs an action on a job or jobs selected by a filter.

What is a policy?

An policy is an instruction given to Watchdoc to process print requests according to conditions. These conditions are managed by filters.

The policy uses filters and sometimes roles.

What is a filter ?

In Watchdoc, a filter is a condition or set of conditions that must be met in order to distinguish a print job from others. The filter is a tool used to implement an event on a print queue.

Filters are based on a series of predefined conditions that apply to users, document types, dates and times, workstations and/or print queues.

For example, "the document is an e-mail", "the document is in colour", "the user is anonymous", "the document is longer than 10 pages" are filters.

In Watchdoc, there are predefined filters (see list), but it is also possible to design specific filters.

The questions that guide the design of a filter are as follows:

  • what type of document is involved?

  • what type of user is involved?

  • which device is involved?

Steps

Steps to activate rules onto a printing queue are the following:

  1. configure the roles (if needed in the rule);

  2. configure one or more filters;

  3. declare the printing queue;

  4. configure and apply the policy event onto the printing queue..

An event can be applied on a group of queues or on a particular queue. The setting of a event on a queue or group of files is done in the same interface.
