Watchdoc - Disabling the MS Windows® printing notifications

Context

By default, versions of Windows Vista and higher notify the user when printing a document in a suspended print queue by displaying the message "Printer temporarily stopped".

However, as the queues controlled by Watchdoc are always suspended, it is advisable to disable Window® notifications so as not to annoy the user with this unnecessary message.

Procedure

The method typically used to disable notification is to deploy a GPO that creates or changes the following value in the user workstation registry:

To create a automatic task (batch):

  1. create a file named EnableBalloonNotificationsRemote.reg including the following text:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Settings]

    "EnableBalloonNotificationsRemote"=dword:00000000

  2. Save your file.

Restart all the workstations concerned to apply the GPO.

Manual procedure

It is also possible to disable this notification manually. The process is as follows:

1. from the user, go to Start> Devices and printers;

2. select a printer controlled by Watchdoc, the click on Printer server's properties:

→ the change is taken into account immediately, the user no longer receives print notifications.
